[ The SHIELD agents move in first but when the SOS goes off, Steve's off like a shot. He calls Sam on the way and the two of them are who take control of the former State Department safe house that's been modified for this particular procedure.

Steve barks orders, sending SHIELD agents and Sam off after the government agents. Luckily, they had a lot of plans in place. The agents are known. They won't hide for long.

He makes his way to Bucky who he expects will be a little disoriented after sedation. They must have used a lot given how quickly the serum burns through things like that. ]

Hey, pal, ready for a vacation to Wakanda? [ Get Bucky out and get him safe while Steve very determinedly gets to work. ]

[Bucky is almost completely out of it when he sees Steve's face over his. Huh. That's weird. He frowns up at him, confused and disoriented as to why Steve would be in Croatia.]

Wakanda? [He looks past Steve to they dizzying array of lights and the IVs in each arm. One is still feeding him sedation and the other was left behind, hanging loose as the agents left in a hurry.]

Yeah, pal, Shuri misses you so you're gonna go visit.

[ Steve lets a medic deal with the medical tech. He could probably rip everything out and Bucky would be fine but he's not taking that risk.

The medic's working quickly and efficiently to get things done. ]

[The tech makes quick work of the IV, of assessing the sedation used, and a quick evaluation of how much blood Bucky has left. It's not much, but super soldier serum will keep him moving until they can get a transfusion started back in Wakanda.]

When did you get here? [Bucky's voice is foggy as he makes to sit up. He reaches out to balance himself by putting a hand on Steve's shoulder.] 'm not feeling so great.

Yeah, you look like shit too. [ Steve catches him with a hand on his waist. Nothing like teasing your best friend is a dangerous situation. ] But you've been lookin' like that since '39 so I think you'll live.

[ He helps steady him to his feet. ]

There's a quinjet waiting to take you to Wakanda. You can sleep on the flight over.

Tired of sleepin'. [Bucky complains as he leans on Steve. The serum is doing a great job filtering through the sedation, but he needs an extra hand moving around still.] Since '39? Really?

What? I could go earlier... [ There are a lot of SHIELD agents working on securing the scene and coordinating the hunt. Steve walks through them all to get Bucky to the ramp up to the quinjet. ] I've known you a long time after all.

[ He walks him up. ]

I'll join you in Wakanda after I finish a few things. Just got a few loose ends to tie up.

[Bucky walks up the ramp with Steve, but as soon as there's any mention of joining later, Bucky curls his fist in Steve's uniform.]

No. No more goodbyes. I'm tired of goodbyes.

This ain't a goodbye, pal. It's a see you later.

[ He guides him to a chair and makes him sit down. ]

Seriously, give me eight hours at most. Just got to finish this up first. Pretty sure we can really give you freedom with this stunt.

[Bucky is not letting go willingly, but the sedation makes his fingers heavy and Steve's uniform slides right through them.]

Steve. [The sedation is playing hell with his emotions and this all feels like too much to deal with.]

Eight hours, pal. I promise. [ Steve starts buckling him in, making sure he's secure for the flight. ] Haven't broken a promise to you yet, have I?

[ It's a little heartbreaking to see Bucky like this but it's the right call. This needs to be handled now and fast, before someone can try and spin it. ]

Just take it easy. You're going somewhere safe.

[Bucky tries to fight back against being buckled in, but he's in no state to do so and his expression crumbles.]

Steve.

[He's secure to go and there's already medical personnel working to brief the Wakandans for what is incoming.]

Easy, pal, I'll see you soon.

[ Steve's always been good at doing the hard thing. It doesn't feel good but to protect Bucky it has to be done.

He gives his shoulder a hard squeeze as he gets to his feet and then walks away, off the quinjet and right into deal with the fallout from this.

Which includes marching into the head of the State Department's office with all the evidence of what was done and planned. No claim of rogue agents will get him anywhere. Steve isn't in the mood to negotiate.

And yes, it is roughly eight hours before he's actually able to go to Wakanda. But he's got a promise to keep. ]

[Bucky is combative as his body is burning through the sedation. It makes the trip less easy, but once he's in Wakanda, they start him on a blood transfusion. Once the sedation properly wears off, Bucky waits as in their infirmary, his mental clock ticking away as he hopes Steve is coming.

He's quietly angry at all of this, at what started in Manhattan now has him laid up in Wakanda because someone tried to steal his blood to experiment on. It's becoming more clear the farther he emerges from the sedation. That was the whole point, drawing him into a state of confidence in the mission only to try and kill him for something he can't control.

He supposes he should be grateful they didn't unleash the Winter Soldier, given there could be copies hiding around the world.]

[ Steve is tired but he's here, walking into the infirmary in the same uniform as when he last saw Bucky. He takes a moment to look at his watch. ]

Pretty sure even with time zones I made it within eight hours.

[ And now he's ready for Bucky to be pissed off at him. He figures there's a storm of temper to ride out. ]

Steve. [Bucky looks over to him and there is indeed anger simmering in his gut.]

We’re not goodbye. Ever again. I’m tired of it.

[Which isn’t exactly Steve’s fault, but he’s the punching bag.]

Well, hopefully, I've made it so that won't happen again.

[ Steve grabs a chair and sits down. He sits forward and rests his elbows on his knees. ]

The government looks real bad right now and we've got so much leverage to get you free. Not, you know, remove the conviction, but you get to choose what you do now. No one holding your leash.

[Bucky sighs as he regards Steve.]

And it only took draining me of my blood. Why didn’t I think of that first?

[He knows Steve doesn’t deserve his sour attitude, but it continues.]

I want what we’ve been saying this whole time. A place in Brooklyn with you.

Because we're both terrible at being villains.

[ He nods a little. ]

Yeah, pal, you'll get that now. Don't worry about it. And you'll get to keep it. No one will take it away because of what Hydra made you do.

[Bucky sighs again.]

Yeah, for some reason I don’t believe that.

Trust me on this one, okay? It's going to work out.

[ Steve is firm on that. SHIELD is doing so much with just this one little underhanded action. ]

I haven't lied to you, right?

[Bucky looks long and hard at Steve before nodding.]

No, you’ve never lied to me.

[He huffs.]

Does anyone know where my blood is, right now?

Not yet. We're tracking it down.

[ It's a big deal. Steve's pissed they're trying to make a new super soldiers off Bucky's blood. It's bullshit. ]

We'll find it. Or we'll get them to surrender it.

[Of course it’s out in the government’s hands somewhere they can’t reach.]

Need me out there?

[Nevermind that he’s still relying on the transfusion to keep from passing out.]

No, not yet. You get better. Maybe stay extra long to let Shuri work on your brain a little more.

[ He reaches out to pat his knee. ]

I've got Sam on it.
